NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Newton Borough Counoil was held last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. Warnook), Messrs. Billington, Prime, Laing, Lee, Riggs, Morrison, Hastings, Gordon, and Buokley.
Slaughtering License. — The Finance Committee ' recommended that the past arrangement with Messrs, Hellaby re slaughtering license be continued. Under this arrangement the Council will receive £70— £10 for license fee and £60 inspection fees. Subsidy. —The Property Tax Commissioner (Mr. Sperry) wrote re subsidy under Local Bodies' Finance and Powers Aot. He said that on the receipt of necessary particulars required under the Aot, 75 per cent, of the subsidy would be paid to the borough. It was agreed that the information be supplied without delay. Niohtsoil. — The question of making proper arrangements for removal of nightsoil was brought up, and, after discussion, was adjourned for a week, tenders to be called in the meantime. Gas Lamps. Secretary of the Auckland Gas Company wrote, stating the Archhill Highway Board had given them notice that" they would not be responsible for the lighting of three lamps in the Great North Road.—lt was agreed 'to inform the Gas Company that the Counoil decline to take any action in the matter. Refuse.— application of Messrs. Casey and Lovett for permission to deposit rubbish, Ao., at the bottom of Princes-street, or some other street in the borough, was declined. Cox's Creek Bridge.—The Waitemata and Richmond Timber Company petitioned the Council for its assistance to obtain from the Government a modification of the present plans for bridge and causeway across Cox's Creek, bo as to allow free navigation of the creek. —Mr. Laing moved the following motion in reference to the matter, "That the Chairman of the late Newton Road Board be respectfully requested to inform this Counail what steps have been taken since the erection of the bridge at the mouth of Cox's Creek by the local' bodies adjoining for its removal as an obstruction and re-erection elsewhere or otherwise, and what is the present position of affairs regarding it."— The Mayor, gave a brief history of the transactions in reference to this bridge. The Government had agreed to call for tenders fdr the work of constructing the bridge whenever the promised assistance from the residents in the locality was reoeived by the Government. Several of the Councillors said they thought that if the bridge be constructed as proposed an injustice would be done to very many people. The bridge should be a awing bridge. After some discussion, it was agreed on the motion of Mr. Buckley, "That the Counoil petition the Government to make a awing bridge ; and that the Mayor and Messrs. Billington and Lee be a deputation to wait on the Minister for Publio Works in reference to this matter; and that if neoessary £50 be contributed to the work by the Counoil, on condition that the residents interested contribute £50." Engineer.—lt was resolved to advertise for applications for the office of Engineer to the Counoil. Collars.—lt was resolved that the present year be ss.
