NEW ZEALAND FLORA.
We undertand that Mrs. Hetloy proposes to do for the flora of New Zealand what Dr. Buller has done for its birds. Mrs. Qetley gained the tirst prize for New Zealand flowers at the Industrial Exhibition at Wellington, and at the same time the first prize for flowers at the New Zealand Art Students' Exhibition here. She has also gained many other prizes in former exhibitions. Sir George Grey, Professor Kirk, Mr. Cheeseuian, and Dr. Von Haast are taking great interest in the work; Dr. Von Haast will promote the project in England, and we have no donbt that the period of the Colonial Exhibition will be very favourable for bringing out such a work as that proposed. Mrs. Hetley intends going to England herself to superintend the publishing of the book. She has already 125 pictures of different flowers obtained in the North Island, many of them not generally known. * She is now 20ing South to paint the principal Alpine flowers. There will be no letter-press in the volume except the botanical name, the native name, and the time of flowering. Sir George Grey has promised to oommunioate with Sir Joseph Hooker, the author of "The New Zealand Flora," to interest hiifa in the project. We may mention that Mrs. Hetley is sending a number of pictures of New Zealand flowers to the Indian and Colonial Exhibition. We have no doubt that the Government will give Mrs. Hetley all the assistance in their power.
