SCULLING MATCH FOR THE CHAM* PIOISSHIP OF THE WORLD. Sydney, December 18. The sculling match between Neil Matterßon and W. Beach, the chum n, for £200 a-side and the championship of the world, took place to-day on the Parramatta River. The weather waa beautiful, and there was a moderate attendance. Beach won easily. He led from the start, and was never caught. It was evident from the outset that Matterson was overmatched. His Excellency Lord Carrington followed the race, and congratulated Beach upon his victory.. The betting was 3to 1 oft Beach. The official time for the ra e was 24mins. lOsecs.
THE VICTORIAN PARLIAMENT PROROGUED. Melbourne, December 18. The Victorian Parliament was formally prorogued to-day by His Excellency Sir Henry Loch, who, in his speech on the occasion, stated that the forthcoming Federal Council marked a distinct epoch in the history of the colonies. He expressed a hope that it would lead to the establishment of an Australian Dominion. Otherwise its significance would be unimportant.
THE POLITICAL CRISIS IN NEW SOUTH WALES. Sydney, December 18. Sir John Robertson has not so far succeeded in forming a Ministry.
WHARF LABOURERS' WAGES. Melbourne, December 18. The Victorian shipowners have formed a combination in order to resist the demands made by the wharf labourers for a large increase of their wages. MORE DEATHS FROM CHOLERA. Brisbane, December 18. Two more deaths have occurred on board the Dorunda, the victims being a woman and an infant. By latest accounts no fresh cases have made their appearance.
TASMANIAN RECIPROCITY SHELVED. Melbourne, December 18. The formal prorogation of Parliament takes place to-day. The Assembly have not dealt with the Tasmanian Reciprocity Treaty, and the measure in consequence is shelved until next session. ANTICIPATED PROMOTION. Melbourne, December 18, It is stated that the Hon. J. B. Kerferd, Attorney-General of Victoria, will shortly be elevated to the Judicial Bench. SYDNEY MARKETS. Sydney, December 18. New Zealand wheat steady at 38 8d per bushel; New Zealand oats have advanced 2d per bushel since last report, and are now worth 2s 4d ; maize, per 56lbs, remains at 33 lid. The Sugar Company's No. 1 pieces are unchanged at £26 per ton. ADELAIDE MARKETS. Adelaide, December 18. Shipping wheat is dull of sale at 3s lid to 4s Id per bushel. Town flour is £8 15s to £9 per ton ; country ditto, £8, THE ZEALANDIA. Sydney, December 18. Arrived : Zealandia, from Auckland, this morning. THE TEKaPO. Sydney, December 18. Sailed, to-night: TeKapo, for New Zealand.
THE TAINUI AT HOBART. Hobart, December 17. Arrived, all well, the s.s. Tainui, from London. She lost a seaman overboard during the voyage.
