PROVISIONAL DIRECTORS: 1, Jambs C. Nairn's 3. Tnoi. T. Maikfiri/d (Merchant) (Masefielri and Co.) 2. Samuel JAOOKR 4. Charlvs ITKHKETH (Hancock and Co.) (Heslccth & Aitken) 6. Geobge Fhaser (Fraser and Tinuo). Solicitors : Rank : National Bank of New Zealand, Secretary yro tern'. A. S. KHMPLAY. Broker: A. SAUNDERS, 2, Insurance Buildings. 1. This Company has bee« farmed for the purpose of Growing, Curin?, and Manufacturing Tobacco in the Co'oay of New Zealand. 2. Various experiments have proved that the climate of New Zealand Is peculiarly adapted to the growth of Tobacco, and that In the North Island the best Havana leaf can be grown, and all that 1* required to start a most Important anil remunerative Industry is a sufficient amount of capital. Tho duty on Tobacco manufactured in the colony is Is per lb, and this rate of duty remains in force until the 31st day of December, IfSS. 3. The pi«sent duty on Imported Tobacco is 3s 6d per lb ; and on Cigars is 6« per lb. 4. The Company take over all the Contracts already entered into by Mr. A. Vollbracht for growing Tobacco for this season, alio all Tobacco now In his handr, and stored or otherwiao secured by him, also what portions •>' suitable new machinery he has already recti vod, and extra Tobacco Meed just arrived, all at cost price only. A large quantity of Tobacco grown last year has been secured by Mr. Vollbracht at an average co«t of Is per lb. The uignod Contracts (or this season represent about 100 acres sure, and seed lias beou given oat sufficient for quite 'JOO acres more, but of course, in the absence of signed contracts, the latter quantity cannot be absolutely relied upon.' The Promoters have given a large amount of lime, and have incurred a very considerable expenditure in securing: the special advantages as aforementioned, and ask from the Company only a sum of £700, half in cash and half in fully paid-up ihsres, which may be said to barely recoup their expenditure, leaving hardlv anything for nearly a year's hard work. ft. It is oitlmated that about two tons of tobacco can be obtained from three acros (i. The Customs' return* for the year 1882 show that dnty was paid in New Zealand during that year on 1.0;<0.8761< s. of tob«cco and 88,9721b5. of cigars, or SSSj tons of tobacco and 308 tons of cigars. 7. Takins the above facts, suppose this Company m«nufact»red only fourth of amount Imported, viz , abcut 121 tons of tobtcco and about 10 tons of cigars: then the cost of leaf Is, excise duty 1«, allowance for decrease In weight 26 per cent, on cost of loaf, dutr being returned on the waste stalks, 25 per cent, it 3Jd per 10, cost of manufac ure 7d. which is very considerably over the mark, somo American manufacturers working it up as low as 6 cents, or 3d per lb. This makes a total cost of 2s lOd per lb. Now suppose the Company sell at only 4d over the import duty price on tobacco, and the average cost for plug is Is 4d over it, then Is per lb. on tho tobacco is the net profit, or on 120 tons is £13,440, being on the tobacco alone OTer 130 per cent, on the Company's capital of £10,000, rithout considering the large additional profit that can be derived from working up tho 10 tons of cigar.*. 5. Tho present enterprise should recommend itself strmiglv to all New Zealand farmers, merchants, and others interested In the advance and prosperity of the colony. Apart from the consideration of actual profit to those concerned In the undertaking, great good must indisputably accrue to tho colony by the introduction of an industry which will tend to keep In this country tho large amount of money which is annually s»nt abroad for tho imported article. Applications for shares to bo made to the Company's Broker, Mr A. Saunders, No. 2, Insurance Buildings, Auckland. The perpetual, trustees- ksTATE AND AGENCY COMPANY OF NEW ZEALAND (LI. 1 Km.
