STATISTICS.

ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES. During tho month of September, ISSS, the number of persons arrived in the colony was 14SS. Of these 704 landed at Dunediu, 17S at Auckland, 157 at Wellington, and 22 at Lyttelton. Great Britain contributed 891 of tho now arrivals, New South Wales and Queensland 309, Victoria 16.", Tasmania 31, Fiji 30. South Sea lslnuiln 50, China 8, other places 7. The departures from the colonies were 854, viz., 737 to tho Australian colony, 7.i ti> Great Britain, 33 to the South Seas, 12 to Fiji. The balance of emigration over immigration for tho month was there, fore 633 persons. THE RAILWAY RETURNS. The Government railway returns for the first fourth n weeks of the current year are just completed. They show the gross receip'R to be £408,755, as against £488,132 for the corresponding period of the past year, a decrease of nearly £20,000. The working expanses amounted to £321,228, as against £300.875. and their returns of receipts was OS per cent, as against 05. The length opened is increased by 03 miles, nevertheless the revenue has fallen oil as above seated. The decrease on tho Canterbury-Otayo lines, however, is as nearly as possible double that for the whole colony, the receipts being only £301.473 for 802 miles, as against £340,007, for 877 miles in the last year, while the return of expenses to income has increased from 62 to 05 per cent. On the other hand, Auckland, Wellington, Napier, Grey mouth, Weßtport, and Nelson exhibit a fair increase. Wanganui and Picton are stationary. TOE REVENUE RETURNS. The Customs revenue collected in the colony last month are not yet computed, but thorie to hand give a total of £109,126. Returns have yet to come from Kaip-ira, Tauranga, Wairau, and Picton. These will probably raise the total to £110.000, which is a large reduction on the previous month (£125,020), and the corresponding month ol last year, £114,241. The sum collected at the'four principal ports last month are as follows -. Auckland, £21,098 ; Wellington, £23 90S ; Lyttelton and Ciiristchurch, £16,055 ; Dunediu, £27,210. At Auckland, Lyttelton, and Dunedin there is a decrease of revenue as compared with the returns for September last and October, ISS4 ; while in Wellington there is a substantial, increase. There is a slight falling oil at all other ports cxcept at Thames, Poverty B«y, Napier, lnvercargill, and Greymouth. The beer duty collected last month was, with oue small return yet to come in, £4050, while for September it was £4013, and October, 1884, £4850. Last mouth £1000 was collected at Auckland, £490 at Wellington, £953 at Christchurch, and £974 at Dunedin. At most places there is an increase of duty over that collected in September last, but a reduction as compared with October las year.
