London, October 22. The weekly returns of the Bank of England, published to-day, show the total reserve in notes and bullion to be £11,700,000, a reduction of £500,000 during the week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has advanced to 35 per cent. HOMEWARD MAILS DELIVERED. London, October 23. The Australian mails per the Messageries Maritimes steamship Sydney, which left Melbourne September 12, were delivered here yesterday via Marseilles. THE WAR WITH BURMAH. Calcutta, October 22. The Privy Council has rejected the appeal lodged by Louis Riel, the Canadian insurgent, against the capital sentence pronounced upon him by the Court at Regina. DEATH OF BISHOP ERASER. London, October 23. The death is announced, at the age of sixty-seven, of the Right Rev. James Fraser, Bishop of Manchester. LONDON MARKETS. London, October 22. The 5 per cent.'consols have advanced by-J to 100$. New Zealand securities remain as previously quoted. The market rate of discount is 1J per cent., or I per cent, below the bank rate. For Adelaide wheat, ex store, 37s is quoted ; and for off-coast cargoes, 35s 9d. Adelaide flour, ex store, is 25s 6d ; and New Zealand wheat, ex store, 2Ss to 345. Tallow is unaltered. Pig iron, f.o.b. in the Clyde, is 44s ; galvanized iron, packed f.o.b. in London, is £16 10s per ton. Best Sydney sun-dried copra is £15 per ton. Kauri gum : Best selected is £10 10s per cwt.
