THE VOLUNTEER FORCE.
* [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN OORREPONDENT.] Wellington, Friday. Sir George Whitmokk, who returned to Wellington to-day, speaks in very high terms of tho general clliciency of the various volunteer corps ho has inspected in tho South Island. Their relative ordor of merit on tho results of tho recent inspection appears to bo as follows:—Nelson, 1 ; Dunodiu, 2 ; Christchuroh, 3. Nelson is a very good first, completely distancing all others. I anticipate that a strong effort will be made to induce the Government to place a much larger sum on the volunteer estimates next session, as it is tho opinion of most competent judges of high authority that tho volunteer force is being "starved," and thus hampered as to attaining the degree of efficiency and usefulness which might be reached under moro liboral treatment.
