THE CITY COUNCIL AND THE MACKELVIE TRUST.
TO THK EDITOR. Sib,—l have a few words to say about the diacuasiou which took plaoe at the last sitting of the City Council relative to the Mackelvie bequest. I do not think that the Council rightly understands the purport of the will. The Mackelvie Gallery will not be a school of art. A school of art means a place where there are class rooms and teachers to instruct pupils. There is nothing in the will relative
to class rooms or teachers. Students will no doubt have the privilege of Htadying from the works of art in the gallery under each regulations as the trustees see fit to make. ■The Council appears too ready to withdraw from their responsibilities in regard to art culture and things connected with technical art. It is premature to say at present what the trustees will do, as they are not as yet aware of the amount of money they will have at their disposal.—l am, &c., Albin Martin. Elleralie, August 22, 18S5.
