[press ASSOCIATION'.] TIMARU, Monday. At the inquest on Edwin Beit, a verdict was returned of " Death from suicide while in a state of temporary insanity." CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. A walking contest took place to-day between Hancock, a well-known pedestriaD, and Libean of Akaroa. The dist*nce wsb 10 miles, and the stake £50. Libean forced the pace tremendously at the start, but after going three miles he complained. of a stitch in the side, and gave up. Hancock walked over tbe rest of the distance. At the Kaiapoi R.M. Court to-day, C. B. Richards was fined £2 for raffling a gun and other articles without obtaining a license from the Colonial Secretary, Three of the participators in the raffle were fined 10a each. BUNEDIN, Monday. A present of a diamond pin was made to Mr. J. K. Sleigh, who is leaving for England, for his services for football. • The City Council have received an offer of a donation of £200 from a gentleman for establishing a market, and steps are to be taken by the Council. INVERCARGILL, Monday. The ratepayers of East Inveroargill decided by eighteen to eleven to amalgamate with the borough of Invercargill, at a public meeting to-night.
