What 18 gas coke ? Gas coke \b nearly all carbon, and carbon properly burned will (fire out, in round numbers, 14,000 units of heat por pound, or very nearly as much as the best English steam coals. Indeed, coal only surpasses it because of the small quantity of hydrogen which it contains uncombinod with oxygen. It is often urged that coke cannot be 11 good as coal because it has lost all the hoat-produciug power equivalent to that of the gas driven off. Jtii quite true that the coke resulting from one ton of coal does not possess the same calorific value as the coal from which it was made. But it must be borne in mind that we are comparing coke with coal WKiaBT roa wkioht. Thus, lOOlbs. of coal produces 661b8. of coke: so that some 30cwt. of coal is required to produce one ton of coke, and the difference satisfactorily allows for the heat producing power of the gas driven off.
