COMMERCIAL.

New Zealand Hbbald Office. Thursday evening.

Business during the past week has only been such in name, everyone's attention being centred on the new Customs tariff, which was proposed by the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer on Friday night last. Perhaps no measure brought before the House for a long time past has received so much general attention as this tariff, and no measure has been more universally condemned. It is a significant fact that the honorable mover of the tariff, at this early stage, already recognises the fact that the oppo-' sition will be strong against.his proposal, and that in his plaee in the House he has intimated that the tariff must not be looked upon as a hard and fast one to which the Government will bind itself, but they are prepared to reoeive suggestions with a view to the modification of ths measure. It is generally believed that the new tariff will be so altered and amended that in its future shape it will not be recognised as the one brought before the House last Friday night. To-day, the steamship Aorangi arrived from London direct. She brings for here a mail and about .450 tons of general cargo. The other arrivals, though numerous, are confined to the intercolonial and interprovincial trades.

Th 6 kauri gum market, which had somewhat hardened during the last fortnight, owing to urgent local requirements and shorter supply, is again unsettled. In addition to the cablegram respecting superior qualities which appeared in the Herald, private cables have reached here from London advising a heavy fall there, and this, taken in conjunction with the heavy stocks and dull trade in London and New Tork, point to a further depression here. Much depends upon what orders, if any, arrive by the incoming mail; and, pending its arrival, we can only quote prices unsettled and nominal as below. Supplies fiom Ist to 25th instant, about 230 tons. Wo quote nominally Poor ordinary, from 80s downwards; fair ordinary, 34i to 35*; best ordinary, from 36s upwards; and East Coast (unsettled), 46s to 48s.
