STRIKE OF GOAL MINERS.
[by telegraph—press association.! Greymobth, Monday. , The Coalpit Heath miners have been on strike for the last week. It was thought they would go to work this morning, but no one rolled up when the whistle blew. The men have been paid 3s per ton hitherto, and demanded 4s. The company offered 3» 6d, and the men then asked that . the rnius should be worked on the " cabling" system, by which the men should arrange to change their places for working every three months. The manager objected to taking the power off his hands in regard to working the mine. The directors supported the manager, and threaten to close the mine if the men refuse the offers made. It is still supposed the men will go to work to-morrow or next day, as they are divided on the matter. la consequence of the strike the Taupo has been delayed since last Thursday. The Murray had to be sent North with only four trucks of coal. The Maori, Charles Edward, and Timaru are awaiting for coal. The Koranui will come in to-night, bat there is no coal for her. The Taupo is not expected to get away before to-morrow. Although the spring tides are unusually low, there is 15 feet of water on the bar, and • wide channel.
