THE LATE ACCIDENT AT MOUNT EDEN STATION.

TO THIS EDITOR. Sib, —Would you kindly permit met« make a few remarks in reference to the late gun accident at Mount Eden Railway Station? on the 25th inat. I notice that one witneai states that he was unaware of it being against the by laws to carry a loaded gun on a train, and yet his brother (another witness) atatei he would have discharged it off the train, only he knew he would lay himself open to the laws by so doing, It is also stated that the railway guard did not examine this. gun. Now, Sir, any person who is accustomed to travel by rail will Bee that it would be impossible for a guard to examine all guns comiug on a train, and particularly a crowded train like this where there were eo many guns on board (perhaps over 30) belonging to p&isengera. I think it is quite sufficient for a guard to caution people carrying arms in the usual way, but to go and examine personally all guns would be an insult to both the intelligence, common sense, and veracity of the party bo treated. Another point. I would beg to draw attention to is this :—A gaud may in fact know nothing of a gun, more than by its name, or by seeing it—we suppose it does not constitute any part of railway officials necessary accomplishments to be well drilled in the use of arms—and guns ia such a case handled or examined by a guard not thoroughly conversant with the use of arms, might result in an accident to passeagers or public at any time.—l am, 4c.., May 29, 1885. A Riadkk.
