' POLICE COURT.— ' [Before If earn. D. G. MacDonnell and C. D. Whitcombe, J.P - *.] Dbunkenujss.—Two men, for first offence, were mulcted in the usual penalty. Saturday - Half Holiday. Charles Theme, Queen-street, was charged with a breach of the Employment of Females Act, by ' employing Kate Haywood sifter two o'clock on Saturday, April 25. The defendant pleaded guilty, and stated he was unwell ; the girl had been assisting his wife, and he was not aware that his small business came under the Act. The Bench said there were so many cases of late that they would impose a fine of 20s and costs. Henry Dryland, blacksmith, admitted a similar charge in employing Jas. Mason, an apprentice, on April 25, and was fined 20s and costs. ffm, Beohan, draper,. pleaded guilty to two ch,urges of employing two young women, on April 25, and was also fined 20s and costs in each case.

Unregistered Doss.— Mary Ann McDonald, Franklin-road, pleaded not guilty to hairing an unregistered dog on her premises on April 21. Mr. G. Goldie, registrar, appeared for the City Council. Thomas Smart, an of the Council, proved the case. The defendant called her brother who admitted that the dog was on the premises, but belonged to a brother who was away from home. Fined 5s and coats. John McCartney, Franklin-road, was similarly charged, and pleaded guilty, but said the dog bad been stolen. Fined 5s and costs. Michael Briggs, Ponsonby-road, also admitted having an unregistered dog on his premises on April 21, and was fined 5a and casts. Alfred Hancook, Newton-road, pleaded guilty, and was fined 5s and costs, John O'Connell, Newton-road, pleaded not guilty to having an unregistered dog on his premises, and denied the ownership of the animal, on April 23. Mr. GoTdie appeared fox the City Council. Thomas Smart deposed that he visited the premises, and a lady there, whom he understood to be defendant's sister, gave the name of the defendant as being the owner. William Muuro gave corroborative • evidence. The Bench dismissed the case, and declined to grant costs to the defendant. John Bain, Ireland-street, was charged with a similar breaoh of the Act on April 21. On the application of Mr. Goldie the case was withdrawn, as the defendant had settled the case an d paid the costs. Seamen's Wages.Two informations, one against J. Brain, shipbuilder, Tauranga, and another against Charles F. E. Riesling, A uckland, for refusing to pay £28 5s and £(} 13s 4d, as wages due to Joseph Rodgers, seaman, were adjourned to Friday on the application of Mr. T. Cotter, who appeared for complainant, with the consent of Mr. S. Hesketh, who represented the defendants. Illtrkating Coach Horses. — Thomas Butler, coach proprietor, was charged with ill treating two horses by driving them on the Warkworth-Wade Road, on April 28. Mr. R. Browning appeared for the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and said ha understood the defendant would not appear. The proceedings had been taken in consequence of many complaints made by the passengers by the coach, of the treat-, ment of horses on the road, and the inspector had been sent to the Wade. Wm. Redgate, inspector, deposed that the defendant drove two horses in the coach on the first stage frcm Warkworth. One was a chestnut horse, which was a mass, of sores, and another a brown one, which was very bad. It was a very bad casethe worst that had come under his notice. Fined £5, and Court costs 9s, Insulting liANonAQE.--Fred Bsath was charged with insulting language to Ann McCaalin, on April 27- Mr. E. Cooper appeared for the plaintiff, but as the summons bad not been served, the case was adjourned to Friday. The Alleged Murder at St.' Louis.— Theodore Cecil d'Auguier alias Walter H. Lennox Maxwell, was charged with murdering Chaa. A, Garreler, at St. Louis, United States, on or about April s.—Mr. Hudson Williamson, Crown Solicitor, appeared for the prosecution, and Mr. W. J. Napier for the defence.—Remanded to Friday. [Particulars will be found in another column.]
