THE GOLDFIELDS.

' fniOM 008 OWN :OOBBK0PONDffll».l \\V ' ; - ' Thames, Saturday. Moa*xtaia« Bxtbkdß).-A body of mineralized quartz, different to anything hitherto met in the mine, was touched in the northeast drive this morning. It is rubbly, and hat been pierced about nine or ten inches. Prom the quantity of water flowing the manager is of opinion that more quartz is dose at hand. rv ■■■•'. :•" , , . Dabt.—The cross-cut is ,in good, but rather tight, «and»tone, traversed by mineral, veins. The Mount Pleasant reef ■hoald be to hand within twenty feet. , . , , , Oambeia.—The oroea-out at No. 3 level holed through to the winze in the main lode to-day, but none of the quartz has yet been broken. 2i xm. 1 Kukaoti Hill.— winze on the Wheel of Fortune leader is dowa about 20ft. The lode is small, bat shows colours of gold. Oalkdoman Low Lev*i«— mine was shut down Jo-day by order of the directors, until a meeting oonvened for the 22nd, to consider the situation, has been held. This is surely a eenseleas proceeding, as there :e an expense at the rate of £60 pa* month for drainage running on. This work has only cost £6000 yet, and of that perhaps a third has gone for drainage and hauling. It is an enterprise in whioh everyone should , have a few shares, the chances are so good. The lodee now being driven in are as likely as any ever found at any level any place on the field. New Eureka (Otunui).—The mine manager reports : At the surface, or No. 1 level, 1 have two men toping on the eastern side of the cross-cut. The reef in these stopes is very —about five —in whioh colours of gold are seen in breaking down the footwall portion. There is a considerable blook to work from this level to the. surf ..No. 2 level : On the No. 1 reef I have two stopea in hand on the eastern side of the rise, which I put up to the No, 1 level, after taking charge. The reef i«: large here. lam taking out about seven feet of crushing dirt, and see gold in it freely. No. 2 reef.: I have one shift in this reef. I drove the level about 15 feet. - The reef is three feet in the face on the Oriental side, all of whioh I sent to the battery. lam now putting up a rise to the surface for air, and for the purpose of getting mullock for filling in. The reef in the rise ie about 18 inches, and we see gold nearly every breaking down. The quartz from all parts of the mine is shaping well at the battery. Battery : We have been crushing with the full force four days this week, and got 140ozs. IBiiwt. of amalgam off the plates from about 40 tons, whioh makes 3020z5. with what I banked last week. 1 have pat through about ninety tone. There are 40 tons at the battery, and 20 tons in the paddock at the mine. In consequence of the state of the road, I have to give the carter more money for cartage. He is now getting 5« per load (or yard). >.

WEEKLY GOLD REIU.BNS.

Cambria.—The diviation drive from the joint orosa-out No. 3 level having reached the lode, communication with No. 2 winze has been effected, as will be seen from the following telegram received last Saturday, namely :—" Holed to No. 2 winze at No. 3 level." The Cambria has therefore tho reef in hand before the Darwin at a point about 100 feet from the latter company's boundary. Darwin.—The distance driven in the joint cross-cut since the footwall lode was intersected leads to the expectation that in a day or two the hangingwall lode will be reached. Aβ soon as the lode is cut through it will, at once yield crushing dirt, and be driven on to the bottom of the Darwin winze, at a distance of about 25 feet. The dead work in the mine having been finished it is opened up for extensive operations on the lode. The battery is crushing with ten head.
