AUCKLAND BRANCH OF THE SEAMEN'S UNION.
A general meeting of the Auckland branch of the Federated Seamen's Union was held at llobson's Rooms on Saturday night. There was a good attendance of members, and Mr, Hannakin, President, occupied the chair. During the evening Mr. B. Book, who was a passenger by the s.s. Zealandia, and of whom certain statements had been made during the voyage, was present, and gave an outline of what occurred during the passage, endorsing what appeared in Saturday's Herald, a.nd repudiated an account given by Captain Webber. He said that the Vigilance Committee had given the agents of all foreign ships in Sydney four months' notice not to employ coloured labour. Eleven new members were elected, bringing the number on the Auckland books up to 291, while there are 350 subscribing to the Union. The, Chairman denied that intimidation bad bisen threatened or used, or in any way intended in connection with the working of the Union. A report was read from the head office, Port Chalmers, stating that the receipts at Wellington during March amounted to £172, sind that the expenditure had been £18 13* M, leaving a balance in hand of £153 9s '3d. During March the receipts at Auckland amounted to £35 6s 6d, and the expennes, £11 17a lid, leaving a balance of £23 8s 7d. A notice was read stating that the society would be registered. A number of acoounts were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned.
