[press association.] WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The slander case Goldsmith v. Anderson still occupies the Supreme Court. '. :.; In the Supreme Court to-day Justice Richmond expressed his opinion that the owning of racehorses was not a recognised means of livelihood.
In Supreme ' Court . the action Andrew Young and wife v> Nicholas Bead and wife has been discontinued. This was » suit for damages arising out of a slanderous ' state* ment alleged to - been . circulated by Mrs. Head against Mr. and. Mrs. Young. Defendants have now pleaded that they hare inspected documentary evidence of Mr. and Mrs. Young's marriage, and are convinced that . the statement is wholly and absolutely without foundation, and if in course of con* versation. either defendants repeated the Blander, they regret the annoyance and trouble it has occasioned plaintiff. At the Supreme Court to-day Lilly Garland, for having assaulted George Craw, was sentenced .to two years' hard labour, l&oberb Williamson, Frances Mahnache, Frederick' Fragnall, and James Kelso, charged wiith as* sisting her, were acquitted. Richard Hawker, charged with arson, was acquitted, A costume cricket match was played at Hagley Park yesterday afternoon, between the jockeys and bookmakers, for the benefit of the jockey Mitchell, who was crippled for life at Ximaru races. ■.-."'-• The Christohorch South and Ellei-amere 'districts have pronounced against, amy increase in public-house licenses. At the Supreme Court to-day a verdict was given for defendants in the libel Action Purvis v. Crawford. ,'".* ,[ . Mr. Larnaoh will probably leave for Christohnrch to-morrow. V Professor Brown gave a lecture last night on technical education under the auspices of the New Zealand Manufacturers' Association. An interesting discussion, in which school teachers and others took part;, followed. The Naval Band, despite the decision of the City Council, played in the Botanical Gardens on Sunday.
