It is eurrently reported that His Excellency Lord Loftus and Admiral Tryon are in receipt of instruction* from the Imperial Government, in regard to the necessary steps for promoting efficiently the naval and lftnti defences of the colony. [Age Specials.) London, April % In the expected event of war between Great Britain and Russia, Turkey will pro* babiy remain neutral. It is now found that Kmaia demands that the Afghan frontier territory under consideration should be extended southward. April 5. A epeoial Cabinet meeting was held toelay to consider a reply received from the Russian Government on the Afghan frontier question. It is suspected that Bsesia's pacific reply and acceptance of the oommiieion to settle the frontier difficulty is only a device to gain time, and that an attack will be made upon Herat as soon as her military preparations are more advanced. The commission appointed to settle the frontier difficulty will, it is thought, be certain to disagree s General fears aro entertained that the crisis will recur, and that war is imminent. Extensive naval and military preparations in England and India are being harried forward with the utmost despatch.
