PREPARING THE MILITIA ROLL.

Scpebintkndknt Thomson has received inetructiona from Wellington to take steps to prepare the roll of the first-class militia, and a start will be made to-day. The firstclass comprises men from 17 to 30 years of age, irrespective of being married or single. [Airing the Waikato campaign the first-class consisted of single men only, bub in the Militia Act now in force the classification of the force was altered an above. Among the exemptions are a number of Government officials in the various departments ; clergymen, university profesaoni, seafaring men (other than watermen or boatmen) actually engaged in their calling; volunteers enrolled; masters of public or common schools actually engaged in teaching; and medical men in actual practice.
