THE FORTIFICATIONS AT THE NORTH HEAD.
Rapid progress ia being made with the construction of the roads and the excavations for the guns at the North Head, the roads especially being in a very advanced state. A separate road is required to each gun, and two of those are now almost-finished. On Saturday the number of men employed was increased by the detachment of A.C. men, who arrived in town on the 'previous afternoon, and who were at once drafted to road work. The A.C camp of six bell tents has been pitched at the north base of Che North Head, facing the Channel, just at the rear of Mr. Bdson's property. On Saturday forenoon Colonel Lyon visited the North Head, and went over the roads and sites, and was apparently satisfied with the progress made and the rapidity with which the work is being pushed forward, as well as with the nature of the work itself. Special attention has been paid to having the entire width of the roadn cut out of the solid. We are informed that at least one of the guns will be mounted in position by the middle of next weok. Five privates of the Armed Constabulary, f rom Patea, arrived yesterday in the Monukau, in order to make up the detachment at the North Shore, to be engaged in big gun drill, to the same strength va at the other ports, namely, 25 men.
