CRICKET.

S HOBDAY was not a bateman'e day by any means. The light was very bad, and the wickets Blow on account of the rain of the previous days.. Auckland and United put in the second day of their contest. United resumed their places in the field with 216 for 5 wickets. Baorton, not out 71, and YV eoeter hit all the boiling that United could send down, in good form. B»rton played in fine style and hit off hie second centnry when he treated the spectators to gallery play. Webster all the while kept scoring when opportunity offered. Yates proved a very good change. Barton wae caught off him, and he bowled Webster, and a emart catch by Swanson off him disposed of A. M. Beale, and the score stood at 332. This was, indeed, a,f ormidable total for the United to face. Swanson and Yates opened operations fortbeA. U. C. 0., and Swanson drove Matheson's 6rst very nicely to the off for » couple. Both were batting very well, considering the light, until Swanson was smartly taken at short-stop by Gardner, and then commenced a procession of batsmen to the wickets. Yates was caught at mid-on. Testro snicked one into short-stop's hands. A. MacCormick was caught at mid-on, and his brother put up one over the bowler's bead, and was neatly taken by O'Brien. McKinney put up one in the same direction, and had to retire. McPherson hacl been playing a very careful game for a long time, and looked like makiDg a stand, when he had to retire—taken at shortstop off Robinson. Mumford was clean bowled by filatheson, and Karvie was not out. Sims and G. Lankham being absent, the innings closed at five minutes to six o'clock for 37 runs. The match will be resumed on Saturday next, when United will follow their innings. Gordon commenced their two-day fixture with Newton by batting first for a total of 45 runs, to which Mills contributed 23, and was the last wicket to fall. Gordon started their venture rather disastrously, Kissling, L. Meldrum, and Ansenne being dismiesed in quick succession. JLiiak and Williams made a stand. W. Meldrum (.13), Ryburn (10), and Gould (12, not out) topped Newton's total, and the innings closed with 57, leaving Gordon iu a majority of 12 runs. This matoh will also be continued on Saturday. Amongst the visitors to the ground ou Saturday was Mr. Barlow, Treasurer to the M.C.0., Mel-
