NEW ZEALAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION.

[BY telegraph.—press ASSOCIATION.] Wellington-, Monday. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association commenced this morning. There are about 240 men firing. The first match is the Wanganui one, 200 and 500 yards, not counting for the belt. During the early part of the forenoon the weather was very bad, and heavy showers tell. After lunob, however, it brightened up, ami remained fine. Immediately after completing the two hundred yards range, the men were dfsmiesed for the day, and the last range will occupy the best part of to-morrow to complete. Why the shooting should have been stopped this afternoon is only known to Mr. Stevens, the Secretary, and if this kind of arrangement is to be followed throughout the meeting, competitors can make up their minds to be here for a fortnight. An additional six targets for short distance range are being erected on the sea side of the camp, and it is understood that the Association through some bungling commenced digging the trenches without first obtaining permission of the owner of the ground. The permission has now been purchased, and by to-morrow morning it is expected that the proposed number of targets will be in full working order. Taken as a whole, to-day's shooting was fairly good, but as there ie only one range completed in the match the -scores at first range are no criterion as to probable prize winners. However, it may be mentioned that the following are the highest scorers at 200 yards, the possible being 35 : — Stitt, Wanganui Navals 32 Kuctien, Wellington aval* .. ..31 Stirling, Auckland Guards 31 Baker, inelewood Rifles 31 Hicksworth, Napier Artillery .. ~ 31 Straclian, Alexandra Cavalry .. ..31 Anketell, Maaterton Kifles .. .. .. 31

About twenty of the competitors have made 30, but to-morrow will make probably a great change in,the positions. To-night a heavy rain has set in, and there looks a probability of its continuing over to-morrow.
