[press association.] WELLINGTON, Wednesday. Spreat, who cut his throat yesterday, is in a critical condition. The Appeal Board for Napier, in connection with the Railway Department, has been appointed, and the appointees, it is under* stood, are : Captain Jfreece, R.M, (Chairman), and Messrs. H. S. Tiffen and Thomas Tanner. NELSON, Wednesday. Three waterspouts have been seen close to Cape Farewell Lighthouse. The keepers were afraid one would have taken the dome oS the lighthouse, Tho sound of water falling on the dwelling-houses is described as being fearful. GREYMOUTH, Wednesday. The Harbour Board to-night considered eighteen applications for the office of Secretary to the Board. Each application was considered separately, till the contest lay between F, W. Lahtuan (an old .resident and business man in the town) and James Atkinson, of tho Public Works Office, Greymouth. Mr. Lahman was the successful candidate by four against two. HOKITIKA, Wednesday. The Bank of New Zealand shipped to-day 57440z5. gold, valued at £22,980. The last shipment made by the bank was 00,1800z5., valued at £12,072 on the 6th December, bo to-day's large shipment is the month's purchase by only one of the banks. CHRISTUHURCH, Wednesday. At the Supreme Court to-day, John Gilmore was sentenced to six months' hard labour, for concealing a reaping-machine and other property from the Official Assignee in Bankruptcy. A boy, five years old, son of Sergeant Brooks, Akaroa, left home at two p.m. yesterday, and has not since been heard of, though a search party scoured the hills all night. He is supposed to have been drowned in the harbour. The bumble bees brought from England, per Tongatiro, were unpacked at the Acclimatisation Gardens to-day. A considerable proportion wera alive, two flying away when liberated. This is the first time an attempt to introduce bumble bees here has succeeded. The Supreme Court Sessions finished today, when the case against Alfred Buckley, charged with assaulting and resisting a bailiff, whioh had occupied many hours, was concluded. He was found guilty, bat admitted to bail to come up for sentence, pending the decision of the Court of Appeal on the law points raised. f The committee of the Industrial Association consider the charge Is per square foot, proposed for exhibits at the Now Zealand Industrial Exhibition, absurd anal prohibitory. .. The directors of the Southern Cross Petroleum Company have received a telegram that No. 3 bore is down 549 feet; oil indications as before. A man named George Smith was fishing at Pigeon Bay yesterday, when the boat upset and he was drowned.' Two men who were with him managed to swim ashore. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. At Waikouaiti, near Tapanui, Harry Gavender, a well known settler, has been drowned, He took a short cut to his house at night, and, it is believed, walked accidentally into the water. A four-roomed house, with stable, at the suburb of Musselburgh, was burned down this morning. - The owner is Alexander Kinnard. The insurance is £200 in the Colonial. M.Remenzi, the violinist, opened his series of cnncerts to-night to a good house. The audience was most enthusiastic. He is supported by a good concert company. The trades congress opens to-morrow. A four-roomed dwelling-house at Musselburgh was burned down this morning. It was insured in the Colonial Office for £200.
