The Nord Deutsche Gazette, referring in an article to-day to the recent annexation of St. Lucia, Zululand, admits the British ris;ht of suzerainty over the territorry, notwithstanding the claims of Messrs. Luderitz and Co., of Bremen. NORTH AFRICA. London, January 6. It is stated that Spain has annexed territory on the North Coast of Africa, lying between Capes Moreton (?) and .Ceuta. . ' 7 .'^ NEW GUINEA. London, January 6. The British Government have extended the boundary line of their protectorate over New Guinea to the Huon Gulf, the southern boundary of the recent German annexation. THE WESTERN PACIFIC. Melbourne, January 7. At a crowded meeting held in the Town Hall this evening, resolutions were passed declaring that the occupation by Great Britain of the islands of the Western Pacific was necessary in the interests of the Australian colonies, and advocating the removal of Lord Derby from his present position as Imperial Secretary of State for the Colonies.
THE GERMAN ANNEXATION, [PRXSS association.] London, January 6. Sir A. Blythe, Agent-General for South Australia, has made a representation to the Imperial authorities regarding the German annexation in New Guinea. England is at present parleying with Germany in reference to New Guinea. Lord Derby has informed the Governments of the several colonies that Germany annexed the northern portion of New Guinea without the consent of the British Government. The Times is making daily attacks on the Government in connection with their action in the Pacific. [REUTBR's TSLEG3AM.] FRANCE AND THE NEW HEBRIDES. London, January 6. Sir Saul Samuel, Agent-General for New South Wales, had an interview with Lord Derby after a Cabinet meeting. Lord Derby assured him that the Government were unaware that France had annexed the New Hebrides.
MR. CHAMBERLAIN ON PACIFIC
ANNEXATION. London, January 6. Mr. Chamberlain addressed his constituents at Birmingham to-day. In the course of his speech he referred to the question of annexation in the Pacific, and declared that England was not entitled to prevent foreigners colonising, but if the rights of Australia were threatened, the whole power of England must be extended in the defence of the power of Australia, which, he said, would be paramount in the Pacific within the next half-con tury.
