Ihe depressed state ot the shipping trade is causing oorisiderable anxiety throughout Erig : land. Accordibg to Messrs. Angiar Brothert, tho position and prospects for steamers are an bad as have ever been experienced during the past twenty-five years. ■ Notwithstanding the fact that the Clyde. Tyne, Wear, Hcrtlepools, Humber, London, and Liverpool contain, at a low estimate, seme 500 to 600 boats laid up, the trade of the world has this year been, and continues so reduced, that the tonnage working otin with difficulty'find employment at the present quite unprofitable rates.. As regards the future, even a considerable increase of trade cannot be expected to cause an improvement in freights generally until time is allowed for. a large> decrease in tho amount of tonnage existing. The period of. possible improvement has . been materially postponed by the fact that during the first seven months of this, year 356 iron steamers of 262,000. net tons, and 57 'iron' sailors of 82,000 tons register, have been added, as' against 387 steamers of 331,000 net tons and 54 sailers of 70,000 net tons turned out in the same period last year, and the losses during the same month are' only 65,000 tons net of steamers aud 29,000 net tons of sailers (iron); this .year,' against 97,000 net tons steamers and 41,000 tons sailors last year. In' effect, the addition to the available tonnage has been increased up to August this year by.an amount equal to that turned out last year to date; and 1883. far outstripped any.year's record for increase in tonnage. >■

ATRaiVAL OF H.I.G.M. SHIP ALBATROSS. ',An old friend to Auckland—the German sloop of war Albatross—arrived in harbour yesterday morning, somewhat unexpectedly, from Apia, after a splendid run of seven days,' fine weather prevailing throughout the passage. Being well-acquainted with our harbour, she found her way up to the man-o'-war ground without the assistance of a pilot, thus showing that she does not want to be regarded as a stranger'any more. From tho officers of the Albatross on duty, we learnt that the vessel has been oh her station, Samoa Island, for the. past three months, but, in accordance with orders, she has come on to a southern climate for the recreation of the officers and crew. That the Albatross pays us a visit for this purpose, may be regarded as a good testimony of the attractions of our city, and the reputation of our industries too, as the fitting out of the Albatross is always connected with" such visits.' For' the benefit of .those who do not remember the yacht-like, rigged

and fast looking vessel that visited us in 1877, wo may state thatsho represents a peculiar class of sloops.named..after her. She ii> of 800 tons register, .with engines of 600 horse-powor indicated, and la fitted with four guns of no moan calibre, also with a couple of those destructive Gatling guns. . Her crew totals 115 all told. During the stay of the vessel here, which is exr pacted to extend to some four or five weeku, it is to be.hoped the.offioers and crew will enjoy themselves thoroughly, and we feel sure that it will.not be from any want of attention on the part of our citizens if they do not do so. The list of her officers will be found in our local columns. . .
