SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH'S SCHOOL, NEWTON.
The three sisters of the Order of St. Joseph, who arrived here from Sydney in March last, Mid who started a school at Newton in the Beginning of April, have been very successful in their labour*. The attendance at the school has reached 220. and the teaching staff has bad to be increased. They are now assisted by two young ladies, and they have received one young lady into the Order a* a postulant. Additions have recently been made to the school-house., involving an outlay of about £6O. To help to pay off this debt a tea meeting and entertainment was held last night at the building, at the corner of Pitt and Wellington Streets. The entertainment was got up by a committee of young ladies of the parish, and the funds to defray expenses were collected before the entertainment was held, so that the whole of the takings will go towards the reduction of the debt. It is estimated that £3O will be realised, thus diminishing the debt by half. About 600 children sat down to tea at half-past six o’clock, and at the entertainment which was subsequently held a large number of adults attended, principally parents and friends of the children. To Miss Heath is due a great deal of credit for the success of the gathering. The members of the clergy present were : Very Rev. Monsignor Fynes, Fathers Downey, Walter Macdonald, Lenihan, and O’Gara.
