BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The Board of Education met yesterday afternoon. Present: Mr, S. Luke (Chairman), Professors Aldis, Tucker, Messrs, J. M. Clark, D. Goldie, and J. W. Carr. New Member.—Professor Aldis took his seat at the Board for the first time, and was welcomed by the Chairman on behalf of the Board. District Scholarships, 1885.— The rejjulations in relation to the district scholarships, 1885, were laid upou the table. Resignations'.—The teachers at Jlaungatapere and Hobsonville tendered their resignations through ill health, as also did a pupil teacher at Mangonui.—The resignations were accepted. Writing in the Public Schools.— A letter was received from the City Schools Committee, recommending that the system of writing in the public schools should be relaxed, and that pupils above the fourth sfcandard;ahould not be required to write in copy-books.—lt wag resolved to refer the matter to the Inspector for hia report. Report to be brought up in a fortnight. Citt Schools Fctnd. —With regard to the school fund allowance, it was agreed to remind the City Schools Committee they had got all entitled to under the new scale ; also,, to ask for a statement of. accounts and liabilities up to date. ' Nelson-stbeet School, —The question of raising the school fence was postponed until funds -were available. Standards' Examinations. '— Considerable time was occupied in going over, in detail, the Inspector's report on the unsatisfactory standard examinations. Kihikihi.—Applications for a head teacher had been advertised for, and the Board had referred all applications to the committee, including those of certificated and uncertificated teachers. The committee recommended Mr.' Sumner, assistant at Otahahu school, for the appointment, but the Board replied that it was against the law to appoint him.—Letter received from the committee renewing application for Mr. Sumner'e appointment temporarily, till heobtainedhia certificate.—Mr. Goldie moved that the recom-, mendation of the committee be agreed to,— Professor Tucker moved as an amendment, "That the committee be informed that the Bbard r have'bo : legal power to appoint Mr. Sumner, and regrets that his'name Was senf to them with the namee of other unqualified applicants."—The amendment was carried. Hamilton Wjsst.—Committee to be asked to send estimate of repairs. Peria.—Application for school referred to District School Committee. Waimatk.—Committee asked to procure site for school, in order to school being erected as soon as funds available. Waitetctna.—The committee wrote desiring to retain Miss Spencer's services as teacher.—lnspector's report on sohool being unsatisfactory, it was determined to adhere to original resolution of Board. Pukeatua.—Mr. Blucher reported, that teacher would leave in a week, and his successor not yet appointed.—Agreed to obtain teacher. Cambridge.—Committee stated that Mies Young desired to remove, .both on account of a warmer climate- and insufficient salary. They urged an-increased'-salary on account of efficiency and-Jengthy service.—lt was resolved to put Misa ; Youug upon list for removal.
