WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.

LFI Oil OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS. ] Hamilton, Wednesday. The estimated cost of the footway proposed to be attached to the railway bridge here is ander £200. Coloned de Quincey lost a valuable mare on Tuesday. The animal was being taken across the Waikafco River in its harness when by some mischance its legs pot entangled in the gear'and it was drowned. A large quantity of trout ova is now hatched out by the Secretary of the Domain Board, Eome portion of which is available for distribution in the surrounding district. There is a very euitable trout stream near Mr. W. Corboy's property, in the Newcastle district, and theru are other suitable streams for which fish could bo secured on application. No better plan, indeed, for stocking the river itself could be found than in providing trout for these streams which are tributaries of it. The soire'e and meeting of the members of the congregation of the Church of Christ was largely attended last night in LeQuesne's Hall. So many were present that the tables, which were liberally spread, were unable to accommodate those present at one sitting. After full justice bad been done to the good things presided over by a number of ladies from both sides of the river, this congregation being by far the largest in Hamilton, addresses were delivered by Messrs. Taylor of the Thames, Aldridge of Auckland, and the local pastor, Mr. Hees. The usual sitting of the Hamilton Parliamentary Union was held last night. The second reading of the Extension of. Franchise to Women Bill was thrown out by 25 to 12. I have been requested to correct an error into which your Cambridge correspondent has fallen in writing, in yesterday's Herald, in suggesting the employment of the Cambridge engine and train in making a second midday trip alternately to Cambridge and Te Awamutu. He says "The cost would be only the difference of coal required between keeping the firea banked up and keeping steam going, for the guards and firemen may be seen whiling the time away every day in the streets of Hamilton." If your Cambridge correspondent, when in Hamilton, has seen railway employed in the streets of Hamilton, they have not been those employed on this train, for I am credibly informed that since it has been running, none of them have been in the township. It is only fair to the men that this shonld be stated. The suggestion made as to the running of the train met with general approval. Morrinsville, Wednesday. It is reported here, and it is to be hoped correctly, that negotiations for the purchase of the Lockerby estate have been concluded with an English syndicate, and that it will be cut np into farms of various sizes and settled. This will give a very great impetus to settlement in this, which is without exception, one of the finest- agricultural districts in the Waikato and Thames Valleys. Cambridge, Wednesday. The fat oxen to be sent by the Waikato Land Association to the Auckland Exhibition on the Prince of Wales' Birthday, will be on show at Buckland's bazaar on Saturday next, the proceeds of the price for admission going to the funds of the Public Library. [BY TaLKGRAPH. —OWN CORKESPONDEKTS.] Hamilton, Wednesday evening. The election of a councillor for the vacant seat in the Hamilton Borough Council took place to-day, and resulted as follows :—A. V. Phillip, 79 ; W. Wood, 41. Majority of 3S for Phillip. Very little interest was taken in the election. Kihikihi, Wednesday evening. Tawhiao and his party left the train to-day at Mercer, and go to tho Waikato Heads before taking passage for the Upper Waikato settlement and Whatiwhatihoe. Strong representations have been made to Mr. Lake by Europeans and natives here, and at Orakau, to get the Government to proceed with the construction of the bridge over the Puniu River. Kewi himself wired to Ministers, 3trongly urging that this work should be undertaken.
