O.NE of our cable messages to-day contains the intelligence that the members of the Afghan Frontier Commission have reached the Helmund where they were met by the native escort provided by the Ameer of Afghanistan, Abdurrahman Khan. The object of the commission of which General Sir Pecer Lumsden is the chief, is, in conjunction with a Russian commission, to mark out and define the boundaries of Afghanistan on the north and As long ago as 1573 the boundaries of Afghanistan were settled by the British Government with Russia, when the Afghan territory between the Oxus to the Heri-Rud was defined as follows : "This internal district of Akoha, Sir-i-Pul, Mairoena, Shibergan, and Andkbj, the latter of which would be the extreme Afghan frontier possession to the north-west, the desert beyond belonging to independent tribes of Turcomans." This boondary baa, however, never been laid down accurately on any map, and the country has not . been examined on the spot with that,viow. This work will now be accomplished by
