POLICE COURT.—Tuesday.
[Before air. F. G. Clayton, J.P.I -Dii[7xkkxi:sy. —Four men were convicted of this offencv, and fined 5s and costs, with the usual alternative. John Holland, for a second offence, was fined 10s and costs, or •iS hours hard labour. Benjamin We3t, aQ old offender, who had been previously convicted a3 an idle and disorderly person, and had" received six months, was sent back to Mount Eden for twelve months, where he would be taken care of. \AG R A XCY. — Dorothy Hawkins was charged with a breach of the Vagrant Act by having no lawful visible means of support. Accuscd Slid she had her parents to look after her. Sergeant Pratt said she kept bad company, and was arrested at the request of her father, who was in Court, and said he had been put to a great deal of trouble. Her father informed him that he did not wish to send her to prison, but desired to reform her, and would take her home. His Worship discharged the girl with a caution, hoping it would be a lessen to her to conduct herself properly in future, Lewis Gershio, for a similar offcnce, was, on the evidence of Constable Bernard, who deposed to finding the accused sleeping on & door step, and when arrested said he lived by begging, and was glad to be taken in charge, and. Constable Hansen, "who gave corroborative testimony, convicted ; but the Bench considered the accused was quite able to find work at his trade as an upholsterer, and the country should not be put to the expense of keeping such men at Mount Eden. His Worship therefore remanded the charge for a week, when he would come up for sentencs, but in the msantime he was to endeavour to find employment. Larceny fkom a Dwelling.—John Willhofft was charged with the larceny of £i 5s from the dwelling of Julia Wilson, ttokebystreet, on October 26. Mr. 'Jackson Palmer appeared for the accused, and asked that th& charge might be dealt with under the 17Sth section of the Act, and the case dealt with summarily. Sergeant Pratt said he had no objection. As it required two Justices to deal with the case, it was adjourned to Thursday, and bail was refused, as there were several previous convictions against the accused.
