WAIKATO DISTRICT NEWS.
[if Oil OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS. 1 Hamilton, Tuesday. . A charge of cruelty to a horse on Sunday last, has been preferred by the police_ against Maurice Kelly, of this place, at the instance of some Auckland gentlemen, who were driving from Cambridge, and witnessed the occurrence, and who have volunteered to come up on the 12th prox. and give evidence. A plan with sections of a proposed footpath to be added to the railway bridge here has been prepared by Mr. T. G. Sandes for transmission to Mr. J. B. Whyte, at Wellington, who is urging the construction on the attention of the Minister of Public Works. The plan is that repeatedly suggested in this column. The nominations for the several iridinp9 m the Waikato County Council must be sent in to thejclerk at his residence, Kirikiriroa, or addressed in registered letters to him at the Kirikiriroa Post Office, by noon of Saturday next. Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed yesterday at the Codlin Moth Bill, as reported in the Herald's Wellington correspondent's telegrams of yesterday. The Bill seems to aim rather at coping with the pest when it has got a footing in the colony than at preventingits further introduction. A meeting of fruitgrowers is spoken of to be called at an early date, when a resolution will be passed urging on the local members to be satisfied with no measure that will not fully provide for the prohibition of importation of fruit from any infected district without the colony. Inspection is a mere farce. Haif the cases allowed to be landed since the proclamation was issued, are not examined. At least half of those received by a local storet H epor wer9 never opened, and those that Have been opened were examined in so perfunctory a manner that the chrysalis of a moth waß found on almost the first apple taken out of one of them. Cambridge, Tuesday.
It is somewhat amusing to see our local blacksmiths announcing that in consequence of the redaction in freight caused by the opening of the railway the price of a set of horseshoes will be lowered one shilling. Freights must be wouderfully reduced indeed to make this difference in the weight of iron contained in four horseshoes. The fact is that six, seven, and eight shillings per set respectively, the charge till now, made, and still made in some parts of the Waikato, is simply outrageous, and disproportionate to all other priceß, and the reduction must come some per cent, lower yet to satisfy the public. Is nothing going to be done by the Waipa Connty Council, people are asking, to replace the Monavale and other bridges ? Where is the Engineer, that no steps have yet been taken in the matter, and one of the principal roads in the district kept closed ? .
Tb Awauutu, Tuesday. There are eight candidates for the five seats on the new Town Board Messrs. Bridgeman, Mandeno, Rutherford, Short, Stichbury, Teasdale, Walton, and Wright. The election takes place on Saturday next. Steps should be taken at once to bring the state of the road from Kihikihi to Orakau before the notice of the Government. Although within the Waiapa County, it is not a county but a colonial road, and the county cannot legally spend a sixpence upon it. Yet, all the same, the Orakau settlers, and some of the best cultivated farms in Waikato are to be found in the Orakau district, pay county rates, but get nothing done to the road, which is their only means of communication with the rest of the (Vaikato. Whatawhata, Tuesday. Local jealousy as to which of two sites Bhould be chosen, has killed the projected butter factory, almost as the tenders for the erection of the factory buildings were abo ut to be called for. Owing to the. state of the river, all attempts to go forward with the erection of the Government bridge at the Kaniwhanawhana Creek are out of the question. The contractors have been idle for months. If this bridge were completed, there would be a good practicable road from Alexandra to Raglan.
