RAILWAY EXTENSION IN THE NORTH.
WELLSFORD SETTLERS' MEETING. A "well-attended public meeting came off yesterday at Wtllsford, in the school-room, in favour of promoting the continuation of the railway northward from Helensville. Mr. Fred. Dibble was called to the chair. Only one opinion was expressed by the several speakers, as to the vast strides the North would make if a reasonable guarantee were given that a number of miles would be constructed annually. The following resolutions were unanimously carried :— 1. Resolved, "That this meeting considers that, in justice to this and surrounding districts, provision should be made for the construction of the orth Auckland Railway as a complete work—commencing at Helensville, and working northwards."—This was proposed by Mr. C. Levet, sen., and seconded by Mr. W. Armitage. 2. Resolved, "That this meeting is of opinion that the increased value of land held by the Government in the districts through which the line would pass would defray the greater part of the cost of construction."—This was proposed by Mr. T. G. Bunt, and seconded by Mr. G. Ogle. 3. Resolved, "That a copy of the foregoing resolutions be forwarded to the member for the district, with a request that he will lay them before the Government, and urge that the claims of the district between Helensville and Whangarei, some 78 miles to communication by railway, be not ignored." This was proposed by Mr. E. Brown, and seconded by Mr. W. Levet. —[Port Albert Correspondent, October 25.]
