COPPER MINING IN CANTERBURY.

Christchurch, Monday. The party appointed by H. Smith and Co., to visit and report upon the claims held by them in the Gorge of Selwyn, which is now being prospected for payable copper, have returned, bringing samples of very rich stone, copper showing freely, and their report i 3 highly satisfactory. It is stated that mining operations on an extensive scale are to be commenced at once, and that tenders for drilling a tunnel to cut the lode will be called for in a few dajs. Should they be successful in their operations, of which they seem confident, it will prove a valuable discovery, and be the means of opening up a rich mineral country.
