At the last meeting of the Board of Education it was decided to postpone for a time the consideration of the appointment of a principal for the Training College. This is, therefore, \vo„tlunk, a favourable time for raising the question of whether the Training College might not be abolished, or at least greatly modified, and joined with the University College. The large majority of the students attending University College are teachers, both here aud in the University Colleges in the South, and it seems clear that for some considerable period these colleges will be normal institutions. That is, indeed, a noble and a useful function. But it is surely unnecessary to maintain side by side with these University Colleges costly Training Institationß for teachers. The public snhool system has now been so long established that it ought not to be necessary to have classes to impart the rndiments of education to teachers. Instruction in the art of teaching ought to be given, but nothing else special ought to bo necesßary. Any such change as we have indicated would strengthen the University, and would relieve the education system of the country of a very great expense, which it ought not to be burdened with. We think it incumbent on the Board of Education, before making arrangements for tho future conduct of the Training School, to consider whether the teachers cannot obtain the necessary tuition at the classes of the University College.
