THE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our own cobbehtosdents.]

■-;.■' Thames, Saturday. New PaiNCB Imperial.—The nsnal monthly cleaning up took place this morning, the good yield of 7700z5. ldwt. of melted gold being banked. Of this, however, ■ 101 Jozs. were obtained from 20lba. of stone which the manager has had in his office since the big patch in the atopea between Nos. 4 and 5 levels. It was kept as a specimen of the stone which was then obtained,-and the yield from it to-day—over sozs. gold to the lb.—shows how rich the deposit of gold was there. The quantity of general dirt crashed was 480 loads, so the general average is very good, nearly l£ozs, per load. This was taken from all parts of the mine, both the No. 1 and No. 2 reefs yielding at the same rate, though the best dirt was taken from the No. 1 reef at No. 3 1eve1.... The mine continues to look well all through. Driving eastward on the No. 1 reef at No. 3 level is in progress, and in the eastern drive on No. 2 lead at No. 4 level a fine strong body of quartz is in hand. Thirty-two head of stamps are still engaged on the company's dirt. •-.-,.

Deep Level Cboss. —The quartz attained ;rom the drive recently extended on the ootwall branoh of the cross-eat at. the 640ieet level,' hae been passed through, the. Herald battery, bat the amalgam is hot retorted yet, and until it is the exact worth of the quartz cannot be Quartz from the intermediate level, below the Imperial No. 5 level, is now being treated. At this' level the hangingwall leader is being, Btoped at its junction with.the crossing, and gold in eeen in breaking. The, footwall branch o£ No. 2 reef is also being driven on seaward, bat it does not show gold. At the 400-feefc level of the big pump shaft, a hangingwall branch of the Caledonian main lode is being driven on seaward: When work was started,' it was about a foot or 18 inches in width, bat it has since opened oat to the full width of the drive. The quartz also has a very promising appearance... Qcteen of Beautt. —The Vanguard reef has been cut through in the cross-cut at No. S level, and found to be about six feet from wall to wall. 'The country on the hangingwall side is much more favourable for gold than .that on the footwall. . The lode is not all solid quartz ; the footwall portion is a fine body of stone, heavily impregnated with minerals, but about three feet of the hangingwall portion is composed of stringers, with layers of sandstone between. These stringers, however, carry excellent minerals, and the manager will shortly try both portions of the reef separately, to see which is belt. It is' •to be hoped that now the company has driven in to this reef they will thoroughly proipeot it, as it is a fine body of stone, and is likely to have a patch in it somewhere, while a yield , of 15dwts. to the load would, I am informed by themanager, give a remunerative' return. No work is going on at present at No. 10 level, bat the last parcel from here, broken out of the atopes, gave nearly lOdwts. per load, a better yield than the previous parcel. Caledonian. — Operations underground during the past week have been confined to repairing No. 1 level, as the winding engine has been idle, while the boiler was being repaired. A fresh start will probably be made early next week. ' A trial parcel of seven. loads from the winze on the Red Queen leader, below the No. 2 level, is now awaiting treatment, and the manager also intends to take out trial parcels from the stopes above, to see what the dirt iVre»liy worth. ■■ Thames Golden Crown.—Cleaning up to-day produced* llloza. 6dwte. melted gold as the result of about 100 tone of general dirt crushed daring the month. This wae taken chiefly from the hangingwall leader and the No. 3 reef. A winze 5s being jrank oh the latter from the 100 feet level to connect with an intermediate level below, and gold is seen in the quartz coming to hand. Sra Walter Scott (Kararigsh&ke).—The melted return was 38oze. gold, from 50 tons quartz, battery returns, but a shareholder estimates the quantity at 37 tone, fie thinks the amount crushed is only about half what would be allowed at the Thames for a ton. At Owharoa also three trucks, if anything larger that, those at Karangahake, are'allowed to the ton, whereas the Sir Walter Scott only obtained two. This, if correct, ie a serious tax upon the development of the lode. The crushing was taken from a trench on the surface about 100 feet long, also from a drive which is in about 46 feet. The first portions of the trench and drive were poor, but the lode improves as driven on. The drive willbe continued, and the : shareholders hope to be able to keep the battery going constantly. . - Ivanhoe (Kurangahake).—A trial parcel of 4 tons from the Sir Walter Scott reef crashed a abort .time ago, yielded 2czs. 17dwts. gold, or equal to 14dwts. per/ton;As the reef is of large size, this ought to be a profitable average. An aerial battery from mine to the battery_ie in process of erection.

Rocky Point.—The loading stope is still being carried along and gold is seen, freely ; colours are also ehowing overhead. . Next week driving will be resumed. About 401bs. of picked stone are on band. , Sharemarket.—Cambria, Is 6d ; Caledonian Low Level, 6d; New Prince Imperial, 16s, 16s 6d, sellers 15s 6a, buyers 15s 6d; Queen of Beauty, 2s. ■ .-...■■.
