BAND OF HOPE UNION.

. ANNUAL BUSINESS MEETING. THB annual business meeting of the Band of Hope Union was held last evening at the Alexandra-street Church. There was a good representative attendance' from all the branohes, and Mr. D. Goldie presided* The annual report, a lengthy document, was read. It referred to the success which attended the preaching of tamperance sermons on May 20, 1883, and stated that the executive coamittee had again-issued circulars inviting similar united sermons on the 25th instant. -The report dealt largely with the operations of the society during the year. Under the head of "Returns," the report stated: Last year we reported' 25 societies affiliated, 19 of which sent in retnrns, showing a membership of 2689, and allowing the 6 unreturned societies toaverage a little over 50 members, weshould bring our total to 3000. Since last report we have added five sooieties, making a total of 30, 24 of which have sent in returns, showing a membership of 3443. Add an allowance of 50 for unreturned _societies, and we get a total of 3750, being an increase of 730 for the year—a small increase, but if the members we have are properly educated, the- labour is not in vain." The balancesheet showed that the receipts from all sources were £240 10s 9d, and the expenditure £246 14s Sd, leaving a debit balance of £6.3 a lid. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was also agreed that the report should be printed, for circulation »fc tha annual gathering, to be held in tl o Choral Hall, oh the 26th instant, at which Hib Excellency the Governor will preside, and that a condensed report be prepared, to be read at that gathering. Mr. D. Goldie waa re-elected President for the ensuing year. Mr. F. Cherry was elected Treasurer, Mr Batger'Secretary, and Messrs. Bell and Hodson, Auditors. The meeting was closed With singing and prayer.
