-The police yesterday arrested a gang of hoodlums connected with a number of petty larcenies, and the breaking into and robbery of the railway van, referred to in yesterday's issue. The following are the names and charges James Calvert, aged 14, Andrew Mowbray aged 13, robbery of 201bs. of lead from premises of Messrs. Thompson and Graham, plumbers, tho lead sold to Ah Kew, Chinaman. John Michael: Knox, aged 13, larceny of pair oE trousers, value 12s, property of Mr.' Dampier; also charged with breaking open railway van, and plundering therefrom commercial traveller's case, :Coritaining samples; pair boots, value 12s, from Mr. MoPherso'n,. Karangahaperoad. Knox is also concerned with a boy named O'Neill in 'stealing 50 cornsacks from Poison's, Wellesley-street, O'Brien, Knox, and O'Neill are also charged with larceny of a. cash-box and cash, value 3Qvfrom a store in Symonds-street. Numerous other offences^are-laid to the door of these larrikins. We understand that these bojs have owned to stealing 120 sacks from Messrs. Blewden and Walsh, and these, with the .'2O sacks stolen, are alleged to have been disposed of to Mr. Williams, fish- | monger.' How Mr. Williams could have | purchased 149 sacks from larrikins, without having his suspicions aroused, is a mystery. The lads last night were in great gloe.in the j cells, jeering the police, and showing by ! their conduct that they are hardened criminals.' The Bench shrinks from sending tbem to gaol, where intimacy with older criminals would simply fit them for tho gallows, and the mild discipline of the Industrial Sohool is simply thrown away" upon-them; . .What is needed-is a Youths' Reformatory;- where real and effective punish* ment could be inflicted, and yet steps taken for the reformation of these juvenile criminals. The leader of the present gang is known as "Captain" Knox,-and is said to |bs a brother of the celebrated Knox, now in the Industrial School.
