A POLICE OFFICIAL SHOT DEAD.

O.y Saturday the loth December, Police Commissioner, Hlubeok was shot dead just after leaving a Socialist meeting at Floridsdorf, a subnrb of Vienna. In Austria, as in most Continental countries, a police officer in uniform attends every public meeting as a represensative of the Government, and it was ia this capacity that Commisioner Hlubeck was present at the gathering in question. The meeting was very quiet and orderly, a lecture being delivered on the " Ancient and Modern Proletariat" and the meeting closed without discussion, the workmen dispersing quietly. It is stated however, the Commissioner used to receive threatening letters, which he had disregarded. Wuon the inventory came to be made of the property of the murdered police officer a threatening letter and a small wooden gallows, with a label attached, bearing the words, "We wilJ soon hang you," to it, were discovered in the house, Besides Schaffenhausen, three other Socialists have been arrested on suspicion in the district of Kornenbnrg. The police have offered a reward of 1000 florins for any information which will lead to the detection and conviction of the murderer
