SAILORS' REST.—ANNUAL MEETING.
The annual meeting of the subscribers to the Sailors' Rest was held on Thursday, Jan. 24, at the offices of the Diocesan Synod, Queenstreet. The RigH" Rev. -Dr. Cowie, Bishop of Auckland, presided. Missionary's Report. — His Lordship read the missionary's report. Balance-sheet.—Mr. EwingtoD, in the absence of the Treasurer (Mr. Larkins), read the audited balance-sheet. The receipts from the 29th November, ISS2, to 9th August, ISB3, amounted to £125 5s Sd, and the expenditure to the same, less £S 2s 2d handed over to the Treasurer. The receipts from the 9th August, 18S3, to January, 24th, ISB4, were £210 12s 3d, and the expenditure the same, less cash in hand £21 3a 2d. Committee.—Captain Tilley, Archdeacn Maunsell, Dr. Kenderdiiie, Mr. Ewington, Mr. Larkins, Mr. F. Battley, and Mr. T. Buddie were elected a committee to act with the three trustees of the Costley bequest. Officers.—His Lordship Bishop Cowie was elected Pre-ident, Mr. Ewington Secre- 1 tary, and Mr. Larkins Treasurer. A meeting of the Auckland Benevolent Sco.iety was held on Tuesday, January S— Bishop Cowie presiding. Rules were adopted, and the following were elected officers for the ensuing year:—President: His Worship the Mayor; Vice-Presidents: Mr. J. M. Clark and Colonel Haultain. Members: Mesdames Brame, Cosgrave, Cowie, John Hay, Judd, T. Macffarlane, L>. Nathan, and A. White; Messrs. John Buchanan, T. Buddie, T. Cooper, W. C. Daldy, l{. C. Greenwood, R. Keesing, T. Macffailane, C. C. McMillan, Dr. J. Murray Moore, Messrs. L. D. Nathan, T. Peacock, and W. Thorne. The half-yearly meeting of the United Ancient Order of Druids was held in the todge-room, Insurance Buildings, on the 7th January, Arch Druid Brother presidiug. The following were the officers elected for tbe ensuing term: —Arch Druid Brother G. Leaning ; Vice-Arch Druid, Brother W. Jennings ; Secretary, Brother E. Mace (re-elected); Minute Secretary, Brother James Clarke ; Treasurer, P. A. Brother A. Kidd (re-elected) ; Arch Bards, Brothers D. McPherson and R. Kirk ; Vice-Arch Bards, Brothers W. Staunton aud Tapp; Inner Guard, Brother R. L. Somers ; Outer Guard. Brother J. Jesaop ; Auditors, Brothers Paul, Jennings, and Clarke. Brother Dr. Waiker was re-elected surgeon to the lodge. P. A. Brother A. Kidd conducted the installation ceremony. The balance-sheet
1 was favourable, and the lod §, reported daring the past year as free from sickness. The Auckland Freetbougbt Association which has been established on somewhat the same lines as the institution which has long, existed at Dane din, was inaugurated by a meeting in the Lorne-atreet Hall on the 13th January. Mr. A. Campbell, President, gave an inaugural address. The University College Council held a special meeting on January 23 to consider the question of establishing a medical school for Auckland. Sir G. M. O'Rorke occupied the chair, and brought up the report of the committee on the subject. Bishop Cowie read a letter from Dr. Maekellar on the subject. Considerable dseussiou followed on the motion of the Chairman that the report be adopted. Mr. -Instice Gillies moved an amendment to the effect that until the Council obtained from the Government the means of providing accommodation for the proper performance of their duties by tha existing professors, the Council would not bo warranted in appointing other professors. The Chairman's motion wa3 loat by 4- to 2. Mr. Justice Gillies' amendment was carried. There *as a good deal of iormal business dis* posed of. The first meeting of the first elective Pharmacy Board, under Pharmacy Ant, since removal of Board from Wellington, was held on January 17 at Mr. H. N. Garland's office, Wyndham-street. Mr. Graves Aickin pre* | sided. Present: Messrs. J. Edson, J. A. [ Pond, and J. P. King. Mr. Aickin wag elected President, and Mr. H. N. Garland Registrar. A vote of cordial and wellmerited thanks was unanimously accorded to the late President (Mr. C. D. Barraud) and Mr. J. A. Allen (Registrar). The new Board have decided to at once take into considers* tion the new syllabus of studies for candidates' examinations under the new Act. Several matters of routine were brought up, and dealt with.
