POLICE COURT.—Wednesday.

[Before His Worship the Mayor snd Mr. A. Clements. J.P.'a.] The Rape Case.—U Goodward was charged with feloniously and violently assaulting lillen Paine against her will, on January 11th. Sergeant White asked for a remand for eight days, as the prisoner was only arrested at a late hour on Tuesday. The remand was accordingly granted. Larceny.—John Metcalfe, alias Johnson, alias Jones, was charged with the larceny of a silver watch and chain, the property of Mary Ann Elkington, on August 4th last. FrOmthe evidence of the prosecutrix it appeared that she is a domestic servant, and in Augußt last she was in service at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Hobson-strcet. The prisoner used to visit there, and on the day the articles were stolen he was about the plaoe, Ralph Asher, pawnbroker's assistant, deposed that the prisoner pawned the articles, and Detective Hughes deposed to arresting the prisoner.

Another ChargEi—The same prisoner was charged with the larceny of a pilotcloth coat from the Governor Gordon Dining Rooms, on November 7. The prosecutor, a labourer, deposed to losing the coat on the above date. Lawrence Solomon, pawnbroker, deposed to the prisoner pawning the coat, and Deteotive Hughes deposed to arresting the prisoner. The prisoner addressed the Bench, and stated that he was in the Hospital on the day the coat was said to be stolen. The police authorities telephonet to the Hospital, and Dr. Bond, the house surgeon, replied that the prisoner was dischaaged from the Hospital on November 9, but that he had been convalescent before that date, and had been in the habit of going out in the meantimo. Their Worships said there was no doubt that the prisoner was guilty, and sentenced him to three months' imprisonment with hard labour for each offence,
