COMMERCIAL.

Nitw Zealand Hiibald Office. Saturday afternoon. The duties collected at the Customs during the week amounted* to :— Duties _ £7,065 2 4 Light dues.. — 51X1 8 Forms and fees „ .. .. 2 10 9 Beer duty 212 18 5 Other receipts 6 15 0 £7,342 19 2 Since our last summary business has not exhibited any features of interest, but has only been noticeable for the evenness of transactions, having maintained a fair amount of activity during the period named. Stocks are still heavy, particularly of hnrdware and drapery goods. The stocks on hand at the time of our last summary have buen added to by the arrival of the steamship Doric and ship Otaki, which both brought large and assorted cargoes.. The result has been thai, buyers are not inclined to do more than a hand to mouth business. Two other veaseln, the Asterion and Laira, are also both dua from London, so that stocks generally will, with these arrivals be amply filled for some time to come. Prices consequent upon this state of affairs of many lines are not so firm this month, and in many instances can only he accepted as nominal.

The quarter ended on t;he 30th alt. baa been a very satisfactory one, business activity being well maintained, and engagements being generally well and promptly mßt. From the Customß returns for the quarter named we find that the snm of £82,688 has been collected as against £88,246, thus showing a deficiency of some £5558. This may to a large extent be accounted for from the fact of receipts out of bond having been restricted <;o the Bapplying, as we have already said, of actual requirements, there being an evident desire not to do more. The building trade still continues brisk, and the large number of new buildings, principally warehouses, now in course of erection in the city can, we think, be accepted as a sure indication of the healthiness of our trade, and the'belief in our future advancement. The large influx of passengers and immigrants into Auckland may also be pointed to an a favourable sign of our stability, especially when we find that there is still a demand for Bkilled labour and domestic help which even this large inflow of population has been unablo to satisfy. In alen and porters there has beon a fair amount of business transacted. Prices, however, remain unchanged at previous quotations. There are full stocks, almost all leading brands. Building material is still well Btooked, particularly slates. Several linea of cement are reported as {having changed hands at fail' rates. Plaster of Paris in in but small demand, and is fully stocked, la bags and bagging, business haa been somewhat quiet, although several tales of woolpacks at fair rates are named. In breadstuff's and grain there haß been a very fair business doing. Make has freely changed hands at from 2i lOd to 3a for local growth, there being none of either Sydney or Fiji in the market. Oats; have been moved off at 2s 4d to 2s 6d, and (luring the past week they have been in good supply from Southern ports, snveral cargoes having reached here daring the time named. Oatmeal wo now quote at £13 par ton, and barley for malting from 3s lOd to ss. The flour market has been very brisk during the last fortnight, a good consumptive tradu having been experienced, and the mills have in consequence been fully employed in executing orderaon hand; We quote localmade silk-dressed at £14; household, £13 ; ! Southern, brands, from £11 to £12. Adelaide flour: There is none in the market. In confectionery a rapidly increasing businesii is noticeable for local made, and this may be attributed to the excellence and purity of the make. Stockß on hand of home-made goods are still very heavy, and somewhat dull of sale for the reason just i named. The kauri gum niarketis still very unsettled, with a most.noticeable disinclination on I the part; of buyers to do any business except for the very Ibest sorts. Prices still remain undisturbed ali for poor ordinary £32 to £36, for good ordinary £38 to £41., and for Bast Coast £50 to ££12. The receipt:! for the past four weeks wore 470 tons, Mie barque Glance,

rfiich sailed for London on September 22, waa he bearer o! 2132 cases, J if2 tons ; the cargo icing valued at £22,912., A.t present there is 10 indication o£ any alteration in this stagnant itate of this market, %s advices from tlie home ind American hays not been very encouraging, ironmongery Btocks are fall of almost all lines, ind business in consequence has been exceedingly quiet. A few lines of Muntz metal are juoted as having changed hands at 7sd to Bd. We now qnote hops (Nelson) at Is 6d._ There has been a large export business done in hides daring the past month, it having been found that higher prices are obtainable in Sydney for good salted hides than when sold locally. Io jams a good trade is reported, Hobart brands being quoted at from 6a Gd to 7s per dozen. ! Nelson brand is somewhat in favour, several lines having been sold at 63 6d. Manures have been moving off somewhat more freely, it being now the time the farmers are in want of this assistant. In candles stocks being very large a somewhat easier price is now being accepted. De Ro'abaix Jenar have been sold at 9£d. Price's BelmontlarequotedatlOJd.andßrandon'sNeva'sand Gouda'a D.R.O. at 9d. Matcheaare fully Btooked, and business does not show much activity. R. Bell and Co.'a 250's we now quote at 14s; plaids, 4s to 4s 6d; Bryant and May's 25Q's, per gross, 16a 9d ; plaids, 4s 6d to 4s 9d. In soaps a good demand has been experienced for local manufactured — their general excellence of make giving such satisfaction as to be found sufficient for all requirements. Iu consequence, foreign brands are not much sought after. In spirits there has been a fair amount of business transacted daring the past four weeks. For Teacher's we notice 28s 6d is quoted. Stocks of this brand are not -heavy. In other brands there, has been a good trade, but at previoußly-quoted priceß. The timber market continues brisk for both local and export demand ; the various mills all being kept hard at work executing orders to hand. In consequence of this briskness, there has been ft good demand for smallsized sailing crafts, to load at' the mills for Southern and Australian ports, and at* fair rates. Several shipments of teas have come to hand from the Sydney and Melbourne markets during the month, and the trade has been looked upon as very satisfactory. The. samples received are all named as being of excellent quality, quite equal to any received here. Tobaccos are fLilly stocked, all brands and prices remain at our last quoting. A fair amount of business has been done.

We have had another quiet month in the stock market. ; hares arej in most cases, held firmly for higher prices,' with the necessary resalt of very limited sales, and until we get an easier money market, we cannot expect to see much alteration in this respect. There has been a fair demand for bank shares. Bank of New Zealand are quotod, sellers £22 12a 6d; Colonial 455, and National 72s 6d, and we have had a considerable enquiry for New Zealand Insurance at 765, and South British at 575, Colonial at 8s 3d. Timber shares nave alio been in request at low rates. There has been a decided improvement in the demand for gold mining shares, more particularly for Te Aroha stocks. This district bids fair, at no distant date, to become a large gold producer. It is expected that the tramway connecting the mines with the battery will be completed during thi3 month, and from the appearance of the reefs and tests that have been made, there should be a very large quantity of dirt that will run two ounces and over to the ton. Shares in this locality have advanced in price very considerably, more particularly the stocks of those companies that have made arrangements with the battery to crush at the rate of 10s per ton. The leading mines are the Premier, Colonist, New Find, Werahiko, Waitoki, Vulcan, Eureka, Canadian. The Karan?ah*ke district is also reported to be doing well, "but these shares are not yet much on the market. At Coromandel, mining matters are dull, but the prospects of the Tokatea, Just-in-Time, Corby and others, are very encouraging. At the Thames, the Prince Imperial still continues to pay good dividends, and the Deep Level Cross is -driving on steadily at the 649 feet level, and a few days age cafca ltader. The country is all that could be desired, and It is confidently expected that before long the reef should be in hand, ff rich gold is got at this depth, it will at once give permanency to mining on the flut, and from present prospects we s.iould have a busy summer and a large increase in the out-turn of gold. The following quotations will give a fair idea of the market value of stocks and the course of sales Company. Buyers. Sellers. effected. £- s. d. £ s. d. Bank of N.
