CROSSING THE CHANNEL ON A TRICYCLE.
A. novel experiment was made at Deyer on July 28. A eeafarirg man named Terry, wJ» is said to have beeu a coxswain in the Navy, conceived the idea of travelling from London to Paris on a tricyclo. He left London on July 25, and arrived at Dover on the follow og day, on a tricycle which is an invention of his own. and which is so constructed as to be capable of forming the framework of a boat. The boat is 12ft long, about oft' 9in side, and about 2ft deep, and ia formed of a Biaipte covering cf tarpaulin. The owner is furnished with a Dair of sculls, all of .wiichgear he carries by "road. There being a sligW ! north-pasterly wind on the morning oi Jnly 28, Mr. Terry prepared his Ixpt and left the harbour at 9 o'clock for. Calais, taking a course direct for that place, A large nutaber of people assembled to see the st 3l ' and as the frail craft put out to sea there was a general expression ot opinion that t&* occupant was exposing himself to ri ik on his somewhat adventurous underiaking. Mr. Terry was'alone, had no other! mean? of propelling himself than his scufls, apd was said to be quite unprovided aglfflSt 4 prolonged voyage. On reaching Calais it ff* B his intention to re-form jia tricycle and p lo ' ceed to Paris. After passing the Admiralty Pier be drifted to the westward, and was reported by the midday Calais boat to ot about mid-Channel, ■vrhfue there was a heavy swell. ■' The voyage was continued insafety, however, and Mr. Terry.arrived at Calai' at 5 o'clock the same afternoon.
