DR. HOLUB'S EXPEDITION.
Dβ. Holtjb intends to start his second expedition ncross the Continent of Africa from south to north at the eud o: Sept 'inbc-r. Ths necessary preparations are macje, the programme as far as possible traced out, six Kuropem servants have besn engaged, and and the to remains now only one obstacle to be removed— the insufficiency of means for his greai undertaking. The cost of the expedition was some years a:*o estimated by Dr. Holub at £6,000 but since then it has been found that £2,CCO more will be necessary to warrant success. Only half of the required sum has as yet been rai?ed, and of this, after all preliminary purchases have been made, and there will remain oily £1.100 to start with. As there was no prospect of raising the money in Austri a or of interesting the government in Dr. Holub turned to his fritnds in England who had promised to aid him. But; here also, siya Me Neue Freie Presse, his expectations were dissaupointcd. Assistance was promised him, but only oa condition chat he uhould travel from west te east instead from south to north, and that ho should subordinate exploration to English commercial interests. Dr. Holub refused chesa term , , audrotarnotlfrom En::laod without having accomplished any tiling. There remains now only one way by which he hopes to be able to raise the mouey—namelv, by obtaining a loan from the Cape Gowrnment which on his first expedition, offered him £4 ; 000 for his collections. Dr. Holub hopes to repay the loan from, the produce of the ethnographical, zoological, botanical and geological collections which he expects to make during the expedition.
