RAILWAY REFORM.-THE PRESENT LOSS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —It has been stated that the loss made by our railways is not so great as it is represented to be in my letter of the 4th instant. I invite attention to the following figures given by the Minister for Public Works in the annual statements for the three yeara under review The net interest earned on " the gross outlay on lines opened and unopened'' was in 1880 81—£3 8s 3d per cent. 1881-82—£3 7s 3d „ „ 1882-83 —£3 3s 2d „ „ This will show how constantly and rapidly the loss is increasing. Let anyone consider what a failing off of 4s Id per cent., ou the capital sunk in our railways, means. I fully expect that when the accounts for the year ending March, ISB4, are made up, the loss for that year will be found to be very little short of £400,000. —I am, &c., Samoel Vailk. September, 13, ISB3.
