GROWN LANDS BOARD.

The fortnightly meeting of the Crown Linda Board was held yesterday. Present: Mr. D. A. Tolo Chief (Commissioner and Chairman), Messrs. May, Tonks, and Dr. Campbell. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.

Auckland Institute Endowments.— The Chairman reminded the Board that the Auckland Institute Council had been asked what arrangements had been made as to the utilisation of the endowments. —The Board was thanked for its courtesy, and informed that the matter would be considered by a committee, who would communicate with the Board.

Pokeko.—By direction of the Board at its last meeting, the Assistant Surveyor-General had been asked to report as to the re-classi-fication of the township of Pokeno. This he recommended, as the town existed on paper only, and would sell in 20 acre lots if reclassified.—lt was agreed to apply for the (Governor's approval of th« re-classification of these lauds.

Water Rioht.—Robert Blair asked for permission to float timber down a branch of the Hikutaia River. He had bought 2800 trees, and paid for them.—The application was referred to the goldtields warden for his report, and an explanation as to how the timber was disposed of, and whether the proceeds would be goldfields revenue or land revenue.

Board of Education.—The Secretary of the Board of Education wrote asking this Board to assist them to secure a site of five acres for a school on Grant andJFoster's Settlement, Te Aroha. It appeared that the occupant, Cox, had not effected the necessary improvements to entitle him to his Crown grant.—The Chairman said the only way this could be effected was by a joint deed of surrender from Grant and Foster to Cox, the occupant. If a formal surrender was made in this way, the way would be open to the Board to recommend that the site be set apart for the purpose required. Timber Licknse. — The Hokianga Saw Mill Company applied for a timber license over the Waikoropupu block of 600 acres, including the watershed.—lt was agreed to inform the applicants the land was not available.

Purua Bridge. —The contractor for tho erection of this bridge wrote stating that he could not get timber for his contract except on Crown lands, and offered to pay Iβ per hundred for the timber he required.—Permission was granted.

Pigeon Mountain.—The Chairman said at last meeting the question of vesting Pigeon Mountain gravel reserve in the Pakuranga Highway Board was considered, and it was agreed to do so on condition that the adjoining Road Boards should have the use of it on payment of 3d per cubic yard royalty. This proposal was submitted to the Pakuranga Board, who now wrote agreeing to the terms.—lt was agreed to ask the Government to give effect to the recommendation of the Board.

Transfers.—Transfers were applied for from W. King, Patutahi, to Mr. Peach, and from R. C. Jordan, Te Puke, to George H. Lee —It w»9 agreed to publish the usual notifications in the newspapers. Crottn Gkakt. — Rupert Stephenson, Katikati, reported having effected the necessary improvements on his selection, and applied for his Crown grant. The local officer having reported favourably, it was agreed to recommend that the Crown grant should issue.. Lea ye of Abse.vce.—Leave of absence for three months was grauted to Mr. Robcbe, of Mangonui, and for six months to William Hynes. Mr. Harrison, of Maungaturoto, wrote stating that he was willing to perform all the conditions except that of residence, or that he was willing, if permitted, to transfer his selection to another. —It was agreed to inform him that the Board could not comply with either request. Late Applications.—Joseph Wilkinson made a late application for the issue of a Crown grant under a land order issued in 1860. He had come then to New Zealand, and resided for four years, when he was called back to England ; but he had since returned, and was willing to take his wife and family on to the land.— The Chairman said that the custom of the Board had been only to recognise the claims of those who had resided continuously in the colony, and this applicant, according to his own ehowing, had buen away sixteen years. —It was agreed not to grant the application. A similar application by Edward Allen, late of the 58th Regiment, who had been in New Zealand since 18G2, was grauted. Joint Grant.—D. and J. Mackay asked to allow the joint grant to issue in the name of D. Mackay.—lt was agreed to, subject to the conditions of residence and cultivation being complied with. Loss.—Samuel Wright complained of the loss of a portion of his property at Opuawhanga, being taken for a road.—Referred to the Survey Office. Timber Pekmits.—Mr. Caulton, Waimata, obtained permission to take timber for building and fenciug, subject to the usual payment, and Mr. Higgine' application to take timber at Maketu was defened for further information. Mr, McMeckan was granted permission to take timber for fending. An application from Chas. Clarke, Northern Wairoa, to cut tea-tree hop poles at Tokatok was refused. Road.—Mr. Jeff Hunter's application for road accommodation to his property at Whangarei was referred to. the Assistant Surveyor-General. Landing Reserve.—An application from Edward J. B. Moss, on behalf of a client, to lease the landing reserve at Te Puke, was declined. Pokeno.—Mr. William Motion's application for leave to occupy a portion of the Huburbs of Pokeno was refused. Hospital Endowmknts.—C. McPherson applied to lease an hospital endowment in Waikato, and wished to have his improvements respected.—lt was agreed to deter the consideration of the application until the Crow.n Lands Ranger visited the district.

Taupibi.—Mr. White had applied to purchase certain lots at Taupiri, and the County Council was written to, inquiring whether the lots referred to were required for public purposes. A reply waa now received that the land was not so required, and it waa agreed to offer it for sale.

Ohinemuiu Coal Pkosfkctixg.—Applications had been received from M essrs. Lockwood, Hogg, and Kielan, for coal licenses in Ohinetnuri, and these had been referred to the warden. Since then it turned out that a prior application had been made by Mr. Hennelly three years ago, and a letter was received from Mr. Waktfield, Under Secretary, that it was the prior application. This was assented to by the Hon. the Minister o* Lands, and it was agreed that the Board had no objection to granting the application, the claim being very clear. Applications.—A number of applications to have land offered for sale were received and dealt with.
