COST OF THE CHANNEL TUNNEL.
At a meeting of the Joint Committee of the two Houses of Parliament on tho Channel tunnel scheme, Lord R. Grosvenor, M. P., tbe chairman of the Channel Tunnel Company, stated the estimated cost of the tunnel was £7,500,000, and that tho compnuy would have to earn a gross revenue of £678,000 in order to pay a dividend of 5 per cent. The working expenses, he anticipated, would not be more than 48 psreent., because they would have a long Jine of 30 miles with ouly two stations. In order to raise the revenue of £678,000 it would be neccessary to carry 2000 passengers each way daily, at 6s, 6d. each, or 1,500,000 passengers every year, and 548 tons of goods per day at 10s. per ton! Sir Joha Hawkshaw, one of the engineers to the company, said the tunnel which they proposed to make would occupy eight years in construction,
