Malet has telegraphed requesting that twelve doctors should forthwith be despatched to Egypt. THE GOVERNMENT AND ANNEXATION. London, July 19. The Hon. Evelyn Ashley, the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies, stated in the House of Commons to-day, in reply to a question, that Sir Thomas Mcllwraith, the ; Premier of Queensland, had tele- • graphed to the Colonial Office that strong discontent prevails in the colony at the decision arrived at by the Imperial Government on the question of the proposed annexation of New Guinea. Sir Evelyn Ashley added that the Government still consider the proposal premature. LONDON MARKETS. London, July 19. The total reserve in the Bank of England in notes and bullion is £11,800,000, an increase of £200,000 as compared with the reserve last ■week. The proportion of reserve to liability remains at 41 per cent. The bank rate of discount is unchanged at 4 per cent., and the market ' rate at 3-|d. Consols have recovered the last fall, and are again quoted at 99J. New Zealand securities remain as follow:—5 per cent. 10-40 loan, 106; 5 per cent. 1889 loan, 105J-; ih per cent.'lß79-1904 loan, 102; 4 percent, inscribed stock, 101.
