BOARD OF EDUCATION.

At the meeting of the Board of Education on Friday the following items of business affecting country districts were disposed of: — Chairman's .Report.—The following is from the Chairman's report:—"The committee have been infoimed of the reservation by the Waste Lands Board of five acres at Kaitaia as a school site. The committee have been authorised to accept the tender of McLeod (£2l) for tanks, spouting, &c., tor the Waipu Central School. The committee have been requested to pay the balance (£4O) of guarantee towards new Bite and building at Mount Eden." Pokeno.—A memorandum from the Education Department re school building at Pokeno was forwarded to the local committee for their information. Pukekimu.—This was an application for improvements with the aid of school fund.— Application granted. Wade.—lt was resolved to inform the local committee that the Board intended to erect a school at Wainui. Waiorongomai. — Application to expend school fund for certain improvements.— Granted. Waiheki Island.— It was resolved that before deciding on the application from this district further particulars be obtained by the Board. Contract Penalties.—Applications were made on behalf of the contractor of Ararimu School for a remission of overtime penalties. —The Engineer and the local committee reported tuat the work was well done, and recommended the application to favourable consideration. A similar application was made in respect of Hotea North, the work there also beiog creditably done. —The Chairman said there appeared to be a notion prevalent that the Board would grant remission of penalties as a matter of course. Contractors should not calculate upon any such indulgence, and should send in their tenders upon data, altogether irrespective of any such contingency. Gkeerton.—An application for increase of teacher's salary was declined. Kauwaeranga. — Applications for improvements, to cost £95. Ordered that tenders be called for.
