MANGONUI.

The whaleship Adeline Gibbs, Captain Reid, cleared from here on Thursday, the sth, for a cruise. The C. W. Morgan, Captain Keith, will clear by the ond of tho week. On Monday night one cf the sailors from the C. W. Morgan swam ashore and escaped, and up to the present has not been captured. On Wednesday morning as W. Wright, native policeman, was looking for this runaway, he dropped on a Kanaka, who works on shore, ond who fomerly was on board this ship. This Kanaka was Buspected with sheltering the runaway, aud at the time when the policeman met him he waa carrying a carpet bag. Wright asked him where he had been, but his answer was not satisfactory. He also wanted to know what was in the carpet bag. His reply was, " Dirty clothes." The policeman was not satisfied, ana believed that the Kanaka had been taking provisions to the runaway. Wright rode on to Taipu, and after a time the Kanaka came there and went into Mr. Adamaon's. The bag was produced, but it was empty. Wright examined it, and found Borne tobacco leaves. He then asked him where the tobacco was. At first he denied having any, but after a time told him, and took him to where he had planted it in the bush, about 14lbs. in all. Wright then arrested him, and brought him into Mangoani. It appears this Kanaka received it from a sailor on board the W. C. Morgan. Mr. Bishop, R.M., could not sit ou the bench, as ho had to prosecute as Cußtomhouso officer. The sailor who sold it, and tho Kanaka who had it in his possession, were brought before two of the local J. P.'s, and fined iu the mitigate;! penalty of £3 103 each, and to be imprisoned till paid. The captain of the W. C. Morgan paid the fine in order to get his man away with him. — [.Own Correspondent, July 11.]
