Among the exhibits on the table at the Philosophical Society's meeting la3t night were about two pounds of quartz, taken from a point between Lowry Bay and Pencarrow Lighthouse, near Wellington, which Dr. Hector said had been tested, and found to contain gold at the rate of 6ozs. or 7oza. to the ton.

An inquiry was held to-day into the cu-cumstances attending the recent fire in Abel Smith-street, wtiich destroyed two dwellings. The jury found that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. The ease of Hunt v. Sir A. In the Eesident Magistrate's Court to-day, a case was beard in which the plaintiff sued the defendant for £20, the amount ot 3 promissory note paid by the plaintiff's bank after the defendant had accepted a composition of os in the pound. The defendant had signed an undertaking to give np the bilf when he got it back. The bill was discounted, and debited to the plaintiffs account. When due the defendant returned the amount of composition, and plaintiff accepted it, but on second thought he returned the cheque to the defendant, and now sued for the whole amount of the bill. Judgment was deferred till next Thursday. Sergeant-Major Morgan, for twenty years staff sergeant-major to the Canterbury volunteers, has been superseded by Sergeant Blackmore.

The Board of Education scholarships have been awarded as follows :—Class A William Dawson, Alfred Burgess. Claas B: Frederick Gibson, Florence Sheard. Class C : Elizabeth Stephenson, John Clarkson. London, and Globe Insurance Company.

DUNEDIN, Thureday. Bishop Neville lectured at the Working Men's Club to-night on the Contagions Diseases Act, strongly condemning it. A telegram received here from Londonsays that 250 carcases of frozen meat per s.s. Fenstanton have been disposed of at 6Ad per lb. INVERGARGILL,. Tharsday. At a meeting of the Frozen Meat Company, the question of replacing the plant lost in the Waitara was discussed, considerationof the matter bring ultimately adjourned. Several of the speakers commented strongly on the apathy of farmers in not supporting the company.

Charles Voight, night-watchman, was charged with discharging a revolver, with intent to injure Duncan McGregor, employed as a watchman at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Defendant, who was not on good terms with McGregor, stated that there was a light in the hotel, and, on seeking to enter, he was knocked down and otherwise abused. He also etated that he used blank cartridge, and aimed at the floor. He was discharged with a caution by the Bench.
